Anacortes Community Information

Culture

One of your first stops in Anacortes should be the Anacortes Museum. The museum strives to enhance public understanding of and appreciation for the history and culture of Fidalgo Island. Historic displays and collections, plus educational activities and events are used to meet this goal. The museum was founded in 1958 and is operated by the city.

Parks & Recreation

The city also manages an extensive park system, which includes Mt. Erie Park and the Anacortes Community Forestlands (ACFL). Hiking, walking, biking and horseback riding trails are available at several of the sites, each of which offers its own perspective on the local landscape. From the forests and marshes of the ACFL to the peak of Mt. Erie, the natural surroundings of Anacortes can be fascinating in their diversity. Camping and boating are available at Washington Park, while ball fields, soccer fields, community pool and public skate park are located throughout the city.

Waterfront

With five marinas and three boat launches, the waterfront of Anacortes is particularly active. Several sailing and yacht charters are based here and sea enthusiasts can find a full range of services to support fishing, diving, boating, whale watching, and other water activities. Guided expeditions are plentiful; one may explore the northwestern waters by kayak, sailboat or chartered yacht. Explorers will also enjoy the proximity to many other harbors and communities by way of cruise ship, sailboat or ferry. Notable sites include Deception Pass on Whidbey Island and the secluded and primitive campsites in the Washington State Marine Parks.

Events

Annual events allow residents and visitors to celebrate their community and culture. The Anacortes Arts Festival acts as the embodiment of the local enthusiasm for art; held annually in August, the festival promotes the community with arts and crafts exhibits, food and live music. Other popular events include the Waterfront Festival, held in May, Shipwreck Days and the holiday parades.
